Scalp Care Before Braids: The 7-Day Ritual
Beautiful braids begin long before the first part is made. The week leading up to your appointment is when the real work happens — gentle clarifying, deep hydration, and a calm scalp ready to be styled.
Why prep matters
Braids put consistent tension on the scalp and hair shaft. Going in with buildup, dryness, or inflammation almost guarantees itching, breakage, and a style that won't last.
The 7-day ritual
Day 7 — Clarify
Use a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup. Focus on the scalp, not the lengths.
Day 5 — Deep condition
A protein-light, moisture-rich mask under heat for 20 minutes. This restores elasticity before the install.
Day 3 — Hydrate & detangle
Leave-in conditioner and finger detangling. Avoid heavy butters this close to install — they coat the strand and weaken grip.
Day 1 — Cleanse and stretch
Final cleanse and a heatless stretch (banding or braid-out). Show up with dry, stretched, product-light hair.
"Healthy braids are 70% prep, 30% install."
